The Day Before. Everything we know about the game

01 November 2023

The Day Before is a multiplayer survival game that thousands of players added to their wishlists. However, the release has raised some doubts. Let’s try to wrap up everything we know about it.

UPDATE: November 2, 2023

Gameplay and features

The Day Before is an open-world survival horror developed by Fntastic. It uses a third-player perspective and takes us to a world devastated by a pandemic that has turned most people into flesh-eating monsters. Players can explore a vast city to find resources and fight against zombie-like creatures and other survivors. Interacting with other players, a complex base-building system, and completing quests are also meant to be essential parts of The Day Before. Moreover, the game’s trailers also promised many additional features, including personalizing players’ characters with different traits, customizing realistic weapons, and driving detailed vehicles.

As you can see, it’s a very ambitious project, particularly for a small studio like Fntastic. The developer has, so far, released only one title – a multiplayer hide-and-seek game called Propnight. However, survival games have been blooming for the last few years, and it’s not surprising that the game drew a lot of attention when it was revealed in 2021. It has even become one of Steam’s most-wishlisted games. According to SteamDB, over 230 thousand players follow the project. Some of them even hoped that The Day Before would be a bigger and better version of Tom Clancy’s The Division 2.

Release date

Initially, Fntastic planned to release the game in June 2022, but the developers moved it to March 1, 2023, citing switching from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 as the main reason for the delay. Later, they pushed the premiere even further. This decision led to a lot of speculation among players and reviewers. The current release date of The Day Before is December 7, 2023

Controversies

Those constant postponements have aroused suspicions. Moreover, some players pointed out that the official gameplay presented by Fntastic looks like a scene-by-scene rework of the Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War trailer. Others suggested that the game’s poster and mechanics are too heavily inspired by The Last of Us. Fntastic’s work model also hasn’t helped build its credibility. The studio describes itself as an all-remote organization. Instead of full-time employees or freelancers, it relies on volunteers from all over the world. Things went from bad to worse when the game was removed from Steam, and Youtube stripped some of the game’s promotional materials. According to the developers, it’s a result of a trademark dispute, as someone claims that they have the rights to the game’s title.

All those aspects have led to accusations that The Day Before is not a real video game but an elaborate scam. However, Fntastic has never asked for any money, so it’s hard to figure out how this fraud would work. Fortunately, in February, Fntastic published a video that reveals the production details and explains some issues that have led to delays, such as abandoning semi-stylized graphics in favor of realistic visuals. It should help players regain faith in The Day Before; nonetheless, we’re afraid that the game has lost its momentum. Maybe it will regain it after the release.
