Survival games are currently one of the most popular genres. Engaging and polished titles, such as The Forest, are essential factors in this success. No wonder players have been eagerly awaiting Sons of the Forest. Let’s take a closer look at the sequel to the Endnight Games survival horror.
Release
The Endnight Games team underlined that Sons of The Forest is their most complex and ambitious project. As such, they’ve decided to involve players in the development process to avoid postponing its premiere. This is why Sons of the Forest starts its career via early access. Its release was scheduled for February 23, 2023. At first, only PC players will have a chance to test their survival skills. We believe the game will be ported to other platforms in the future; hence, Sons of the Forest may eventually become playable on PS4, PS5, and Xbox.
New setting
The Forest takes us to a remote peninsula settled by cannibalistic monsters. Players assume the role of a plane crash survivor who tries to find his son without getting killed in the process. The sequel offers a similar yet quite different setting. In Sons of the Forest, the player’s character is sent to an isolated island on a mission to locate a missing billionaire. Of course, before helping some rich guy, the protagonist must survive in this living yet deadly environment.

Gameplay
Sons of the Forest follows its predecessor’s footsteps and grants players complete freedom. Therefore, there are no NPCs waiting to give players some optional quests or scripted encounters. The game’s world lives its own life. The story doesn’t force you to take any particular actions, so the events solely depend on what you want to do and how you want to explore this open-world map. However, we assume that you will want to avoid dying in the first place, so you’ll have to take care of the protagonist’s well-being. The bottom line is to provide fire and shelter. However, it’s up to you if you want to construct a spartan cabin or release your inner architect and raise a spectacular fortress. Finding food is also essential, so you’ll have to go fishing or hunting.
You also should think ahead, as Sons of the Forest features dynamically changing seasons. Some resources, such as food, are almost impossible to reach during the winter. Consequently, it’s wise to stash some of them in spring and summer, so you won’t starve desperately fighting for survival when the cold months come. As virtually every survival game will also feature crafting mechanics that let you build and upgrade your weapons, tools, and other items.

Fighting and co-op
Unfortunately, keeping fire, finding food, and building shelter are not your only concerns, as you’re not alone on the island. Furthermore, it is populated by cannibalistic mutants. Some of those monsters look like humans, while others resemble nothing you’ve seen in your life. On the flip side, you may play in the co-op mode and join forces with other players, thus increasing your chances of survival. A vast range of weapons, including pistols and axes, are there to help you level the playing field.
