Where do we travel to in Total War: Three Kingdoms?

Total War: Three Kingdoms is a twelve installment of Total War series created by Creative Assembly guys, and published once again by SEGA. After very successful predecessors like Total War: Rome 2, a Romanian history driven version of the game or set in bloody, violent and vicious times of Mongolian overlord – Total War: Attila, this time Creative Assembly decided to travel back in time into the ancient China.  The beginning of the campaign is set around the year of 190 A.D – the age of Three Kingdoms. After the collapse of Han dynasty, whole country is divided into titled three Kingdoms –  Shu Han, Wei and Wu.

Become one of the leaders of these kingdoms and try to reunite the empire. Either by diplomatical measures or violent invasions.  Famous, and well-known system of complexity of Total War games is still there, and its basics didn’t change at all. Hundreds of possibilities are waiting to be choose from. You are the decision maker and its up to you how you will lead your empire to the victory.

The mechanics of Total War: Three Kingdoms

The gameplay is once again divided into two parts. The first one – focused on a bigger scale is connected to the world map and everything going on there. Diplomacy, trades, recruiting the units, raising buildings , managing the cities. That list is way much longer… Second part is, naturally linked to the combat phase of the game. Enormous battles, hundreds of dead bodies, tense and exhausting sieges – that’s all about combat and fighting.
As we can see, the roots of Total War: Three Kingodoms are the same as for the previous installments.

What’s new in Total War: Three Kingdoms?

Even though we could already experience this oriental setting in Total War Shogun, the China one is way much complex and more intriguing. Creative Assembly put the biggest focus in the history of their games into story, as the heroes (leaders) we can choose from each has individual history that affects the game. Depending whom we chose from, we will receive extra individual perks and benefits, and, what’s the most important, specific units to command.
This more story driven game mode also brings us many side quests, and connections between heroes. There is a completely new social system linking our protagonists, called Guan Shi, that allows us to build either trustworthy connections or be led by treacherous temptations.
Diplomacy system also received a new and fresh overhaul. It’s not only pure statistics, and exploiting the dumbness of AI. Now we need to take into consideration the advices of our generals, the whole atmosphere in our country, actual market state. It’s much more multi-dimensional, and not only numerical, and sometimes even ending up in complex legislation process.
