Anyone checking where to buy digital game codes runs into two products side by side: a code for one game and a gift card that adds credit to an account. At checkout they look alike. However, they behave very differently once you redeem them.
Where to buy digital game codes: on sites that name the platform and region of every code. Gaming gift cards also come straight from platforms such as Steam. A game code adds one title to your library, whereas a gaming gift card adds credit to your account wallet.

A game code and a gift card are two different products
A game code unlocks one product. Valve describes Steam Keys as “single-use, unique, alphanumeric codes that customers can activate on Steam to add a product license to their account.” In other words, the code turns into the game, and the game stays on the account that redeemed it.
A gift card, by contrast, carries credit rather than a product. Sony lets you add funds to a PlayStation wallet with a PlayStation Store gift card, also called a voucher code, and you can then spend those funds on content and services from PlayStation Store. Similarly, when you redeem an Xbox code for account currency, Microsoft adds that amount to your Microsoft account balance.

That difference decides which one to buy. A code suits a buyer who already knows the game. A gift card, on the other hand, works better as a present for someone whose wishlist you cannot see, or as a budget you plan to spread over several purchases.
Where to buy digital game codes: retail and online services, plus gift cards from platforms
Retail is one route. Valve calls Steam Keys a free tool that helps developers sell their games at retail and through other retailers, and it asks them not to give Steam customers a worse deal than key buyers get.
Wherever you buy, confirm the platform and region on the listing before you pay, because a code that does not match your account may not activate.

Region and currency: the rules on each platform
Region and currency are the two settings that decide whether a card or code works on your account. Each platform, however, draws the line in a different place.

Steam: wallet currency and digital game codes
Steam sets a wallet’s currency when you first add funds. Valve’s Steam Wallet help page explains that an account without a wallet may be asked for an address “to determine the correct currency for your Steam Wallet,” and that later funds go into the wallet’s current currency. Valve also lists “Limiting redemption to be in the currency of your Steam wallet” among its measures against gift card scams.
Game keys follow a different rule. According to Valve, “Region restrictions on CD Keys vary by each individual publisher. There is no standard or universal restriction placed on retail games.” It also advises: “To be safe, ask the retailer if there are any region restrictions on this product before purchasing.”
PlayStation: voucher codes for games and wallet funds
Sony’s voucher help page keeps the rule short: “The voucher code needs to be for the same region as your account.” For a physical voucher, Sony adds, look for a printed flag that shows the country or region. PlayStation Store codes have 12 digits, and Sony notes, “Voucher codes can only be used once.”
Xbox: game codes, gift cards, and regions
Xbox codes are 25 characters long, mix numbers and letters, and come in five blocks of five. Microsoft warns, “Some codes are meant for a specific country/region that might not match the regional settings on your account,” and it asks that the region on your Microsoft account match your physical location. Nintendo: eShop Cards by country and currency
Nintendo splits its rule by market. In the Americas, “Nintendo eShop Cards are specific to a particular country, which means they can only be redeemed on systems and/or Nintendo Accounts that are set to that same country.” In Europe, by contrast, a card works “in any country that uses the same currency as the Nintendo eShop Card,” so a card bought in France can go to an account in Germany or the Netherlands. Nintendo also states that it cannot exchange a card for one from another country.
On any platform, do not try to route around region settings. Valve, for instance, states that “using a proxy or VPN to disguise your location is strictly against the Steam Terms of Service and may result in restrictions on your Steam account.”
Where to buy gaming gift cards cheap without losing their value
A lower price on a gift card only helps when the card fits the account. As the rules above show, Steam limits redemption to the wallet’s currency, PlayStation requires a voucher from the account’s region, and Nintendo ties cards to a country or a currency. A card that does not match those settings therefore saves you nothing, whatever it cost.
Two more facts affect value. First, credit stays with the account that redeems it: Valve states that “your Steam wallet funds cannot be moved or gifted to another Steam account,” and Microsoft says Xbox Support cannot transfer a redeemed code to another Microsoft account. Second, on PlayStation “your wallet funds are used first” when you pay, and another payment method covers the rest.

Physical Steam gift cards are leaving retail
Valve introduced Steam Gift Cards at retail in 2012 and added the digital program in 2017. It has since announced the end of the retail program and explained why: “As we have continued to put more and more restrictions in place, scammers have adapted.” Valve spells out the plan: “As Steam Gift Cards run out of stock at retail locations, we will not be restocking them. We expect all retailers to be out of stock by the end of 2026.”
Cards already bought keep working. Valve says you can use existing gift cards on Steam “whenever you choose, subject to local laws,” and it continues to offer Steam Digital Gift Cards.
A five-point check before you buy digital game codes or gift cards
- Decide what you need. One specific game calls for a code, while flexible credit calls for a gift card.
- Confirm the platform on the listing. A Steam Key goes to Steam, a PlayStation voucher to PlayStation Store, and an Xbox code to a Microsoft account.
- Match region and currency to the account, not to the page where you shop.
- Buy for the account that will spend it, because Steam Wallet funds cannot move between accounts.
- Check for “once per account” products. GAMIVO’s FAQ notes that some products can be applied only once to an account, so a new key may not activate if you used a similar code in the past.
