The Outer Worlds 2: Gameplay, release date, and more

28 March 2025

Obsidian Entertainment has made us wait awfully long for The Outer Worlds 2. Even its trailer admits that it takes three times as much time to make the game twice bigger. However, it’s worthwhile to summarize everything we know about the upcoming RPG.

The Outer Worlds 2: Release date

The first The Outer Worlds 2 announcement was released in 2021, and it jokingly commented on the fact that there’s no actual gameplay to show. When the gameplay trailer finally appeared at The Game Awards 2024, it also made remarks about the prolonged development. It’s great that the studio notices problems and can make jokes about itself. Unfortunately, it doesn’t change the fact that the exact release date remains unknown. We only know that the studio plans to release it in 2025.

Platforms

Here, we’ve got some solid details. Contrary to the first announcement that omitted Sony consoles, the game will come out on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. It will also be available on Game Pass from day one. Hence, space travelers who want to try it out don’t have to reach deep into their wallets.

The Outer Worlds 2: Gameplay

When it comes to the basics, The Outer Worlds 2 resembles previous Obsidian role-playing games such as Fallout New Vegas and Avowed. Therefore, the game uses the first-person perspective. Announcements promise a more action-heavy punch, with hints of new weapons, smoother combat mechanics, and larger areas to explore.

The player’s character is fully customizable. As a result, it’s up to you who will be the hero of The Outer Worlds 2 and what the character’s skills and flaws are. It’s only up to you how you deal with quests and problems you encounter. However, you have to be aware of the consequences because the world will react to everything you do. Even though The Outer Worlds 2 is a single-player game, you’re not alone on your adventure. As before, you will join forces with different companions who provide their unique abilities, agenda, and backstory, making the journey colorful and memorable.

Story

The Outer Worlds 2 will take us to an entirely new star system, which means a brand-new cast of characters, factions, and planets to discover. The players will assume the role of an Earth Directorate agent looking for a source of an extremely dangerous rift. Consequently, the fate of the whole galaxy lies in your hands. You will conduct your investigation in Arcadia, a colony torn by a war between the Protectorate, corporations, and a religious order.

Despite the new scenery, the essential narrative elements should remain intact. The first game’s witty banter and RPG elements stole players’ hearts, so we expect the signature dark humor and satirical takes on corporate greed, which were also present in the game’s announcements and The Outer Worlds episode of the Secret Level series.

I wonder if The Outer Worlds 2 will let us witness any consequences of the choices we made in the first game. Since it’s a completely new story in a different corner of the universe, I can understand if it will have nothing to do with the events from the original The Outer Worlds. However, sequels usually tend to include characters and references to their predecessors, even if their plots aren’t directly connected.
