The most disappointing video game movies

29 September 2019

Let’s be honest, taking a video game’s storyline and transforming it into a movie script, is no easy task.  And the very first step of anyone who tries should be to give up on the idea of pleasing all the fans. Video games and cinema are two different worlds that don’t necessarily cherish the same things. So creating a decent movie adaptation really is a tough job. It’s especially true when we’re talking about the best-known titles. They have a huge following, and there’s always a passionate group of gamers ready to notice every detail that went wrong. Yet even though the bar for this genre isn’t set particularly high, there are a few movies that more than deserve to compete for the title of the most disappointing video game movie ever created.

Tekken

Tekken is a movie based on a series of video games known by the same title. It was released in 2009 and follows the story of Jim Kazama on his quest to avenge the death of his mother. Even though the game itself was a huge hit, the movie failed to leave an impact with its unimpressive narrative. The only thing saving this production are the decent fighting sequences, yet they aren’t enough to change the fact that even the game’s creators weren’t too pleased with the adaptation.

Alone In The Dark

Another place on the list goes to Alone In The Dark from 2005. The plot centres around a supernatural detective who goes by the name of Edward Carnby. We follow him on his quest to explain the mysterious disappearance of an ancient civilization, while also discovering more about his past. It does sound like a decent material that should suffice to make an action-packed horror movie, yet turned out to be a complete failure. Weirdly enough, it still managed to get a sequel.

BloodRayne

Coming from the same director as Alone In The Dark, BloodRayne is the next title that deserves to be mentioned here. The story follows Rayne, a half-vampire herself, on a mission to hunt down the Vampire King and take revenge for her mother’s death. But suffice to say, it failed to become either a critical or a commercial hit. But what it managed to get are the six nominations for Golden Raspberry Awards and, to be honest, that’s about all the information you need about this production.

Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun Li

The Street Fighter series is one of the classics in the gaming industry, and it absolutely deserves its spot on the list of the highest-grossing video game franchises. Yet this 2009 movie didn’t do it justice. And while there’s no denying that creating a compelling narrative for a fighting game is a difficult and complicated task, Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun Li didn’t even take a small step to achieve this goal. It not only failed to deliver an exciting plot, but even the fighting scenes weren’t really that enjoyable. All in all, it’s not really one of the movies you’d be happy to watch again.

Super Mario Bros.

Well, the title should be enough for anyone to guess which video game it’s based on. It’s difficult to say whether the huge popularity of the Mario franchise made it more or less difficult for this movie to succeed. Yet, it probably doesn’t matter anyway since it’s just bad. Its release wasn’t a commercial success, and it failed to impress the critics as well. It’s easily one of the worst movies of all time, but in a weird twist, it was still able to garner quite a following. But it’s more likely to be the effect of the magic of Mario than of the film itself.
