RTS Remasters worth giving a try!

05 February 2020

In the light of recent unfortunate events and premier fiasco of long-waited release of remastered all-time classic we would like to recommend some alternatives that will bring a true spirit, which perhaps has been lost in a meantime, for all real time strategy fans out there. We really don’t like being left with a feeling of dissatisfaction and emptiness as some of you might now.

So here is a short list of GAMIVO recommendations ,to fill the void and thirst, of RTS games that has been remastered very well, with the attention to the classic mechanics but with an addition of new and modern resolutions:

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition

Logo of Age of Empires - a classical RTS game

Naturally this list couldn’t exist without Age of Empires games – a true classics, roots and foundations of RTS games. First installment brings us to antiquity and as a leader and a general we direct such civilizations as Babylonians, Assyrians, Greeks or Persians to the greatness and the top of world domination ladder.
Game has received tons of quality of life improvements such as fully customizable UI, higher population cap – now 250 from 50. Rally points that has been missing in the original game or a very demanded attack button. There are also new idle notifications, or a event hotkey that allows us to move when our enemy is attacking us.
Age of Empires Definitive edition has naturally brings a huge graphic improvement and a accessibility for 4k resolution. Game runs much smoother and is simply more enjoyable.

Another classic that has received a HD overhaul. This time there are not as many changes to the core of the games. Classic mechanics stays the same, there are naturally a lot of bug fixes, quality of life changes and some balance tweaks – but that’s all. Everyone familiar with Stronghold series -which is a little different than other RTS , will feel like a kid in a candy store. New, upgraded graphics help to enjoy the game even more than previously.

This is the same story as with the previous part. Very successful remaster focused both on single and multiplayer experience. In the first one we receive four new civilizations, new story line in the form of campaign of “Lost Khans”, balance adjustments, quality of life tweaks, upgraded UI, ability of zooming in and out.
Player versus Player has received a cross-play function, ladders, new and fully functioning match making system and a special tutorial for this specific mode.
There is also an overhaul to the map editor and an easier possibility of sharing them with the community.
Age of Empires II Definitive Edition naturally is focused on upgraded graphic style and 4k resolution as well. There is also a chance to download ultra-high resolution pack directly from the game client

A space oriented RTS - StarCraft

A very successful remaster of most famous and criticaly-acclaimed space and futuristic oriented RTS. Roots as with the previous positions stayed the same, the general experience won’t change – and that’s good. New graphics, smoother visuals, correct hitboxes– all of them will make the game more pleasant and more important- competitive.
Balance tweaks here and there won’t drastically change the approach to the triad of StarCraft Protoss, Zergs and Terrans are equally strong and balanced.
Like the AoE II StarCraft has received a new life when it comes to the multiplayer – improved matchmaking, automatically created tournaments with the chance of qualifying to the global finals. Better and stable connection guarantee rivalry at the highest of levels.
