How to become a pro gamer

31 August 2019

Gaming is more than a hobby – it’s a lifestyle. While people have been saying that for a while now, until recently it’s really been just an edgy way of saying that you don’t really do anything else aside from playing video games. Nowadays, though, that’s entirely possible! You can make an entire career out of video games – and we’re not talking about making them.

Being a pro gamer is pretty much like being a rock star of the gaming world. You get to do the thing you really love and are really good at and show it off to the world during flashy events – and people will love you for it. If that sounds super rad, here are a couple tips on how to get started on that path

Pick a game you want to be pro at

You can’t very well become a pro gamer without a game you can excel at. The absolute first step is pick one that you stand a chance at being pro. No pro gamer is great at all the games – you need to find the specific niche you want to fill. The best starting point in this case is picking a game you enjoy and are really good at.

Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be a competitive Animal Crossing scene out there, so it’s not exactly that you can pick any game that’s available. The genres that have the largest competitive scenes include: FPSes, MOBAs, card games, fighting games, and, of course, RTSes – so, in general, games that have a serious competitive aspect to them. Choose one that’s available on your platform of choice (if you’re on PC, make sure your rig is nothing short of immaculate – any minor slowdown can seriously hamper you), preferably one that you actually enjoy, and you’re ready to actually start your journey.

Git gud

Whatever game you pick, a lot of other people are playing it. That’s the entire thing with competitive gaming – you compete with others. To actually make it as a pro gamer, you need to be the cream of the crop. And for that, you need dedication.

Talk to people online and find out what people do to get better at a game. Find out the most recommended tips and tricks. Most importantly, however – practice. Getting good takes a lot of dedication and if you don’t put your entire heart into it, you’ll get nowhere. Practice as much as you can (to a healthy degree, of course – you don’t want to get carpal tunnel syndrome) and don’t get discouraged if you’re not good enough yet. Nobody’s born good – real winners are made.

Get connected

No pro gamer worth their salt can really operate as a lone wolf. Once you’ve gained the skill and confidence to enter the big leagues, you’ll need companions. Joining a team will be hugely beneficial even if you’re trying to be pro in a 1v1 game, as they’ll offer you tons of insight, opportunity to practice, and help you develop your communication skills. For team games, you won’t even be able to participate without a team. Whichever route you take, though, you can’t go wrong with a group of reliable allies on your side

Get noticed

Get into as many tournaments as you can and your team will soon start gaining traction. That’s a good time to start looking for sponsors, which should allow you to make this an actual career for yourself. Sometimes, if you’re good enough, a sponsor will find you. Whatever the case may be, make sure you maintain a good public image, so that sponsors will actually want to support you.

Don’t let it get in your head

Once you get to the top, it’s far from over. Plenty of new challengers will show up, so if you want to stay on everyone’s lips, you need to keep training. Once you’re famous, it’s easy to let it get in your head and start acting arrogant – resist that urge. Always be respectful and remember where you started. That’s what being pro is all about.
