While the Vikings sure had their work cut out for them in the early days, players will be happy to know that Northgard still has all the combat one needs for an exciting but challenging gaming affair. As one of the more popular RTS games available, Northgard has earned its place in the RTS hall of fame as it has all the components requires to challenge not only your creative thinking as a player but your combo and control skills as well.

Northgard

This stealth-based game follows in the hallowed tradition of many RTS classics, but it has lots of engaging and unique features of its own too. With a powerful and engaging narrative, the Vikings of yore were a brooding and bloodthirsty bunch but you can expect the Vikings in Northgard to offer up a bit more color and humor, which probably helps to explain why Northgard is so popular.

What is so different about Northgard?

As mentioned above, Northgard is an RTS styled game that requires players to tame their surroundings while collecting sufficient resources that will allow the Vikings to survive the challenges of their environment all while keeping enemies at bay. However, unlike other numerous RTS games that you may have come across in the past, Northgard approaches base building very differently.

Rather than have players build only to a tech tree, Northgard actually limits the number of buildings that a specific area can have, which truly helps players have one of a kind experiences that are missing in other RTS games. The first territory that players build can only accommodate 4 buildings so players have to be creative and find ways of expanding into newer territories.

Because 4 buildings are in no way sufficient for building a thriving colony, players are forced to colonize new lands so that their settlements can continue growing and expanding. Since the success of one’s economy is tied to the number of territories that a player has colonized, players also have a large border or area to defend, which definitely helps to ante things up especially when a player is facing an aggressive opponent. The challenge lies in moving single armies around various areas of the map without being attacked or colonized.

The type of territory that the player chooses, to begin with, has a huge impact on the game so players have to think through their decisions carefully as it could affect their expansion later on. Some of the territories available include forests, wolves caves, ruins, shipwrecks, the Draugr Tomb, Swamps, the Circle of Stones, lakes and fertile land.
