Escape from Tarkov – Gamivo Christmas Countdown

18 December 2019

We have a pleasure to reveal another mystery hiding in our GAMIVO advent calendar.  Our Christmas Countdown is approaching near to the end, but don’t be fooled by that. The best is always kept to the most patient and there is no exception to that.  Today, under number 18, we had hidden a truly intriguing, multi-dimensional and what’s most important multi-genre game – Escape From Tarkov. Being on the edge of first/third person shooter and massively multiplayer game, it has also a strong influence of RPG and survival games involved and there are without a doubt some horror/thriller features in it.

Escape from Tarkov is created and published by Battlestate Games from Russia. Even though it is still not so famous and widely recognizable, they are a group of experienced people, previously working with projects like S.T.A.L.K.E.R or Bioshock.  Small, indie, probably underbudget company working on ambitious, complex and difficult to manage game? Sounds like a recipe for a disaster. Not this time. This is a true cinderella story, a true black horse of gaming industry.

The setting of Escape From Tarkov

Game is set in alternate history of 21st century, more specifically, the action takes place somewhere near the  European border and Russia.  An enormous political scandal led to the one of the biggest conflicts in Europe.  Terra Group – a private corporation decided to declare war against Russia. Using their special forces – USEC, which is one of three playable factions in Escape From Tarkov they try to invade a vital trade point between Europe and Russia – Tarkov.  BEAR, the second faction, loyal to the Kremlin authorities, try to defend and guard Tarkov. The Scavs, the last faction, are the inhabitants of Tarkov. Split between two forces, fighting for their independence and doing everything to grant themselves a survival.
The aura of Escape From Tarkov is really heavy, tense and breath-taking in negative way. You are under a constant pressure – of enemies, of environment, of lack of resources and weapons. There is no time to rest and you need to be constantly aware and conscious as danger is approaching every minute.
Game draws a lot from products like S.T.A.L.K.E.R or Fallout series and other more post-apocalyptically centered games. And it’s not a blatant scam or any kind of fabrication. Escape from Tarkov is still very unique and much more realistic than its inspirations.

One of the camps in Escape From Tarkov

Escape from Tarkov as a great hybrid of genres.

This is without a doubt the best feature of this game. Mechanically it is a first or third person shooter. When it comes to the world – we are dealing with big and open, mmo-like instances. There is a complex and well-developed surviving system, and the character progression is done better than in some RPGs games. There are four main skill trees – physic, cognitive, combat and practical one. If you focus on one you will forget abilities from the others. Balance is the key to this game.
Game is focused around narrated missions. We team up with other players from chosen faction and we explore Tarkov. We can face either NPCs that give us mission to progress the general story or other players. Then we engage in PvP battles for vital resources and weapons. Game has a perma- death feature available at all time, so be carefull, as you die once, you loose all your gathered stuff. Death is waiting for us not only in form of other players, but as well as illness, dehydration or radiation sickness. Get this game now and give yourself a treat of playing one of the most strategic and brutal games of our times.
