Best Mortal Kombat games

29 September 2025

The release of Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection is a month away, so it’s a great opportunity to present a list of the best MK games. The ranking is totally subjective, so feel free to discuss it on our social media.

Table of Contents:

5. Mortal Kombat Trilogy

  • Release date: October 11, 1996

Some state that MKT was dated even when it came out. However, I still consider it a wonderful wrap-up of the 2D era. It gathered all the characters, with four of them (Jax, Kung Lao, Rayden, and Kano) in two different versions to serve fans an endless MK feast. Back in the day, I spent weeks trying to perform each finisher and uncover every secret of the game.

Unfortunately, there were some elements that were missing, such as the announcer’s comment featuring Goro’s name and The Pit II Stage Fatality. Moreover, Sub-Zero’s classic spine rip finisher was censored. Due to the incredibly large number of over 30 playable characters, including bosses, the game wasn’t well-balanced. And the possibility to play Kintaro was priceless!

4. Mortal Kombat Deception

  • Release date: October 4, 2004

I believe that Deception is the best 3D Mortal Kombat installment by far. It improved the Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance gameplay and was much more polished than the hurriedly released, unfinished Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. It introduced a fair share of new warriors, including Shujinko, Ahrah, and Havik. There was also a new finishing move, hara-kiri, that allowed the defeated warrior to take their own life.

The most unique part of MKD was the Konquest Mode. It followed the tragic story of Shujinko, who tries to find six powerful Kamidogu. On this journey, players travel across realms, learn new techniques, and meet most of the MK characters.

3. Mortal Kombat 9

  • Release date: April 19, 2011

The series returned from 3D to 2D gameplay in style! Mortal Kombat, commonly referred to as MK9 or Mortal Kombat 2011, first came out on consoles. After two years, it also graced PC, becoming the first MK game since 1997’s MK4 available on computers.

MK9 offered an altered version of the events from the first three games. As a result, it served as both a sequel and a reboot that erased the events from the 3D era. Besides the cinematic story mode, which was unprecedentedly long for a fighting game, MK9 featured tag team fights, multiplayer, and the Challenge Tower that could painfully test the player’s skills and determination.

2. Mortal Kombat 2

  • Release date: November 12, 1993

The first Mortal Kombat was a blast, but the sequel surpassed it in every way. It had better graphics, a wider roster, more special moves, and, of course, more finishers. Each character had two Fatalities and two bloodless ways to celebrate the victory: Friendship and Babylity. The number of hidden characters also increased. In MKII, players can find three secret opponents: Jade, Noob Saibot, and Smoke.

It is also worth mentioning that many fan favorite characters debuted in Mortal Kombat 2. It was the first appearance of Mileena, Kitana, Baraka, Jax, Kung Lao, and fierce bosses Kintaro and Shao Kahn.

1. Mortal Kombat 11

  • Release date: April 23, 2019

In my opinion, it’s the best Mortal Kombat game ever released. It skillfully built upon Mortal Kombat X and incorporated some mechanics tested in Injustice 2. Instead of ready character variants, it allows players to customize their favorite fighters and equip them with special moves of their choice. Obviously, combat is the core of every fighting game, and in MK11, it is also polished and updated with such novelties as the flawless block. I also love Friendships that are so funny and creative that I prefer ending matches in a peaceful way rather than finishing off the opponent.

The plot in Mortal Kombat 11 was also quite good. Maybe it wasn’t a story masterpiece, but time travel is a logical device if you want to justify comebacks of already deceased characters. It’s really hard to say anything bad about MK11.
