Where to Buy Cheap Game Keys: What the Price Actually Depends On

02 October 2026

Two players can pay very different amounts for the same game on the same day. The price of a game key is the sum of a few factors: the region the key is made for, the platform and edition, the number of suppliers offering it, and the taxes of the country you buy from. Where you buy matters too: on Steam, the publisher’s sales calendar decides when a game goes on sale, while on GAMIVO, competing suppliers set the price of each offer. Once you know these factors, a low price stops being a mystery.

The best answer to where to buy cheap game keys is a site that lists several offers for the same game and shows, before payment, the region, platform, edition, languages and final price of each one. The cheapest game key site is the one where the lowest offer also works on your account.

This guide explains each price factor, gives you a table to use while comparing, and ends with a checklist for the product page. The facts come from Valve’s Steamworks documentation, Steam Support and GAMIVO, with every quoted page read on September 24, 2026. For the full path of a key from supplier to your library, see how game key sites work.

What makes one game key cheaper than another?

A game key is cheaper when one or more of these factors work in your favor: the key is made for a region with lower prices, the edition is the basic one, several suppliers compete on the same listing, or you have a membership discount. When you buy on Steam itself, a publisher sale can lower the price as well. The game itself is identical. The terms of the key are not.

A key is a code, not the game. Valve’s documentation describes Steam keys as “single-use, unique, alphanumeric codes that customers can activate on Steam to add a product license to their account.” The same logic applies to keys for other platforms: you pay for the right to activate one copy on one account. For a closer look at Steam keys, see our guide on the cheapest place to buy Steam keys.

That is why the terms written on the product page matter more than the price tag. Two keys for the same game can differ in where they activate, which platform they are for and what content they include. Each of those differences can move the price, and each one decides whether the key is right for you.

Why does the same game cost less in some regions?

Publishers set a separate price for each currency and region, and many take local incomes into account. According to Steamworks, “the price for each product on Steam is specified and displayed using 37 different currencies and 4 region groups.” A key made for one region can therefore start from a lower base price than a key made for another.

Steamworks offers publishers three built-in ways to convert a price into other currencies:

  • Exchange rate conversion only. This method “uses a simple currency exchange rate at the time indicated.”
  • Purchasing power conversion only. This method “uses public data about the purchasing power of customers within a given country and/or region.”
  • Multi-variable conversion. This method “takes into account multiple factors for each currency, including local purchasing power, the expected cost of comparable entertainment goods, and exchange rate.”

Publishers can also set every price by hand.

The catch is activation. Steam Support states that “region restrictions on CD Keys vary by each individual publisher. There is no standard or universal restriction placed on retail games.” A key made for one region may not activate in another, so a lower regional price only helps if the key is made for the region of your account. A key marked Global has no such limit: one GAMIVO listing checked on September 24, 2026 described its key as “a global, region-free Steam key.” Our guide on where to buy PS5 game codes cheap covers the same question for PlayStation accounts.

How do platform and edition change the price?

The same title often exists as several products: one per platform and one per edition. A Standard Edition key includes the base game, while higher editions add extra content on top of it, and each edition has its own price. Keys for different platforms are priced separately too, because each platform version is a separate product.

On GAMIVO, the product page names the platform, the activation type and the edition, and it links to other versions under the line “Looking for a different edition or platform?” The operating system matters as well. GAMIVO’s FAQ states: “Mac offers are always specified on the product page and in the product name. If you do not see that information on the page, you should assume it is only meant for Windows.”

The practical rule is simple. Before comparing two prices, make sure you are comparing the same platform and the same edition. A lower price is not a bargain if the key is for a different console or lacks the content you wanted.

When are game keys cheapest?

On Steam, game prices are usually lowest during publisher sales, and Valve’s rules decide how often a game can be discounted. On sites where suppliers compete, such as GAMIVO, those Steam rules do not apply, because each supplier sets the price of its own offer.

Steam holds four major seasonal sales a year, and Steamworks names them: “Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.” All games on Steam are invited to take part in each of them with a discount.

Steam also limits how often a game can be discounted. Steamworks lists the rules: “A product cannot be discounted within 30 days of another discount,” with an exception for the seasonal sales. A game “cannot be discounted for 30 days following its release,” unless the publisher set up an optional launch discount before the release date. Valve names the aim of these rules: “to increase pricing transparency to customers.”

These limits apply to prices on Steam only. The end of a Steam seasonal sale, such as the Steam Summer Sale, does not raise prices on GAMIVO.

For you, this means two different timing rules. On Steam, price drops come in waves: a large discount on a game released last week is unlikely, and waiting for a seasonal sale may pay off. On GAMIVO, the list of offers is worth checking on any day, because the lowest price comes from supplier competition, not from Steam’s sale calendar. How does supplier competition lower the price?

When several suppliers offer keys for the same version of a game on one site, they compete on price, and competition pushes the lowest offer down. GAMIVO describes its model on its own blog: the platform “presents offers from multiple suppliers who compete with prices,” a model that lets it “offer incredibly competitive prices on a daily basis.”

You can see that competition on the product page. On September 24, 2026, the GAMIVO listing for ARC Raiders (PC, Steam key, Global, Standard Edition) showed 12 offers from different suppliers. Each offer displayed the supplier’s name, a satisfaction percentage, an order count and a link to the supplier’s terms of service. The full list opened with the offer labeled “Lowest offer.”

Offers are only comparable when their terms match. On one listing, all offers are for the same product, so the price is the main difference. Across two listings, check the platform, region and edition first, as the sections above explain.

What does the final price include?

The price on the product page is not always the price you pay. Two things can change it at checkout: tax and payment method. GAMIVO’s FAQ states that “every GAMIVO customer is charged the correct VAT value based on their country of residence within the EU,” and that you choose your location “from the drop-down menu in the bottom right corner of the Purchase Summary view.”

Payment options depend on where you are. According to GAMIVO’s FAQ, “you can pay for your purchases with one of the numerous payment methods depending on your region and the chosen currency. All the available methods will be visible at the payment step of your purchase.”

When you compare prices between sites, compare the total in the purchase summary, in the same currency and for the same country. The number on a listing is a starting point, not the end of the comparison.

Do memberships and coupons make game keys cheaper?

Yes. A membership can lower the price of an offer, and a coupon can lower it further when the product meets the coupon’s conditions. GAMIVO’s SMART membership page, read on September 24, 2026, lists “daily discounts up to 20%” and “monthly discounts up to 10%.” On product pages, the SMART price is shown next to each offer.

On the ARC Raiders listing checked the same day, the SMART price of the lowest offer was about 17% below its standard price. The size of the gap depends on the offer and the day, so treat it as an example, not a rule.

Coupons have conditions of their own. GAMIVO’s FAQ asks you to “ensure that the product you wish to purchase meets the requirements for the discount coupon” before you use it. Check this before checkout, not after.

A low price only counts if the key fits your account

A cheap offer and a cheap offer that suits you are not the same thing. The difference is almost never the price itself. It is the terms: a key for another region, another platform, another edition or a language you do not play in. GAMIVO’s FAQ says it plainly: “Please, make sure to check the region, language, platform, or any other restrictions on the product page.”

Release dates can differ too. GAMIVO’s FAQ notes that “release dates tend to differ based on the region. GAMIVO follows the EU release dates for all products.” If you pre-order, the date on the product page is the one that counts.

A seven-point checklist before you buy a game key

  1. Platform. Is the key for the platform where you play, for example Steam, Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5?
  2. Region. Is it Global, or made for the region where your account is registered? Open “Check restrictions.”
  3. Edition. Does the edition include the content you want?
  4. Languages. Does the language list include yours?
  5. Operating system. For a Mac, is Mac named in the product name and on the page?
  6. Offers. Have you opened the full list of offers and compared the supplier details?
  7. Final price. Have you checked the total in the purchase summary, with your country selected?

If all seven answers are yes, the lowest offer on the listing is also the right one for you.

GAMIVO adds one more check after the purchase: before a key is displayed, you confirm in your account that its platform and region are correct. If you spot a mistake at that point, you can ask for a return. GAMIVO’s FAQ states: “You can request a return as long as the key has not been displayed.” The time limit for a return depends on the supplier’s terms.

How to recognize the best site to buy game keys online

The best site to buy game keys online is the one that makes the checklist above easy. Look for four things: several offers per game, so prices compete; the region, platform, edition and languages stated on every listing; supplier details next to each offer; and a final price shown before you pay, with tax for your country.

A site that meets these criteria lets you find a low price and confirm that the key fits, in one place. To learn what makes a key site trustworthy, read our guide “Are game key sites safe and legal? How authorized reselling works.” If you also buy console codes or gift cards, our guide on where to buy digital game codes covers those products.

Frequently asked questions

Game key sites and prices

What is the best game key marketplace?

Sites of this kind work as a meeting point between players and many suppliers, so the best choice is the site where many suppliers compete for each game and every listing shows the region, platform, edition, languages and final price before payment. On GAMIVO, each listing shows all offers with supplier details, so you can compare them on one page.

Where can I buy cheap game keys?

You can buy cheap game keys on sites that collect offers from several suppliers for each game, because competition pushes the lowest price down. On GAMIVO, the full list of offers for a game opens with the lowest one, and each offer shows the supplier’s name, satisfaction percentage and terms of service.

Why do keys for the same game have different prices on one site?

Different suppliers set their own prices for keys to the same version of a game, so one listing can show several prices. For example, on September 24, 2026, the GAMIVO listing for ARC Raiders, a global Steam key, showed 12 offers. When the region, platform and edition match, the difference comes from supplier competition, not from the product.

Regions, VAT and timing

What does “Global” mean on a game key?

“Global” means the key has no regional activation limit, so you can activate it on an account registered in any region. A GAMIVO listing checked on September 24, 2026 described such a key as “a global, region-free Steam key.” Keys made for one region can cost less, but may not activate outside it.

Does the price of a game key include VAT?

For customers in the EU, VAT depends on the country of residence and is settled at checkout. GAMIVO’s FAQ says that every customer “is charged the correct VAT value based on their country of residence within the EU,” and you select your location in the purchase summary. Compare final totals, not listing prices.

Is the cheapest game key offer always the best choice?

The cheapest offer is the best choice when its terms fit your account: the right platform, region, edition and language. If two offers have the same terms, compare the supplier details shown next to each one. A lower price for a key made for another region or platform is not a saving if you cannot activate it.

When is the best time to buy game keys?

On Steam, the best time is usually a seasonal sale: Steam holds four a year, in spring, summer, autumn and winter, and outside them a game cannot be discounted again within 30 days of its previous discount. On GAMIVO, suppliers set their own prices and these Steam rules do not apply, so check the list of offers on any day.
