“Dune” fans can’t complain. Besides successful movies directed by Denis Villeneuve, we have recently gotten the Dune: Prophecy TV show and the Dune: Spice Wars strategy game. Release date and platforms
Dune: Awakening was developed by Funcom, the studio that older gamers can remember as the creators of the groundbreaking adventure games The Longest Journey and its sequel, Dreamfall. More recently, they released Conan: Exile, proving they know how to make an online survival game set in a fan-favorite universe. It’s important because Dune: Awakening is also a survival online game that uses a renowned IP. It was officially announced in 2022 as a part of a 3-game deal between Funcom and Legendary Entertainment.
It will be released on June 10, 2025; however, players who have bought Deluxe and Ultimate Editions can begin their journey on Arrakis earlier, on June 5. Initially, Dune: Awakening will be available only on PC. Funcom plans to release PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X versions later.
Dune: Awakening – Story
Players familiar with Frank Herbert’s most famous novel or its adaptations can be surprised because Dune: Awakening changes the original story. In the game, we will discover a timeline where Lady Jessica had obeyed Bene Gesserit bidding, so Paul Atreides was never born. Moreover, the Harkonnens’ deception didn’t go as well as in the novel. Leto Atreides survives the assassination attempt, and Arrakis is torn apart by a war between two great houses. Moreover, the Fremen have disappeared.
You will follow a Bene Gesserit agent on a mission to find out what happened with the Arrakis natives. The developers promise a cinematic storyline, so I assume that there is some complex intrigue behind those events.
Gameplay
You will create your protagonist from scratch and, depending on your playstyle, pursue masterhood in one of the Great Schools:
- Bene Gesserit,
- Trooper,
- Mentat,
- Swordmaster,
- Planetologist.
Dune: Awakening should offer everything players love about open-world multiplayer survival games, but with a pinch of spice melange. Consequently, players will have to avoid gargantuan sandworms, build their unique ornithopters, extract the precious water, and seek out shadows to survive Dune’s merciless heat. Spice is essential in the Dune lore. Hence, it always plays a pivotal role in the game. You can sell or consume it to gain new abilities. Funcom also highlights the game’s complex crafting and building mechanics that allow players to assemble magnificent structures.
You can join forces with other players and form or join guilds to explore Arrakis together. However, you can also be a lone wolf. Also, PVP fights are optional, so you don’t have to combat other players’ characters if you don’t like such activities.
