A Minecraft Movie: GAMIVO’s review
A Minecraft movie is a strange creature: a mix of very low reviews with huge earnings and an audience who seems to love a new take on their beloved universe. Let’s reflect on what the Minecraft Movie meant to us.
A movie no one expected to happen
The magic of Minecraft lies in its sandbox gameplay, simple mechanics, and charming atmosphere. Produced by Mojang Studios, It’s one of the most popular franchises in the world, beloved by both kids and adults. In this title, your weapon is creativity.
No one really expected Minecraft to become a movie, and let’s be frank: video game adaptations can get quite controversial, especially when they concern games like Minecraft.
The movie aimed to translate the beloved sandbox game’s limitless creativity into a cinematic experience. Directed by Jared Hess and featuring a star-studded cast, the film embarks on an crazy adventure in the beloved universe. While it delivers moments of visual splendor and lighthearted fun, the movie ultimately falls short in several key areas, leaving fans and newcomers with mixed impressions.
Straightforward story
The movie centers around four main characters: siblings Henry and Natalie (Sebastian Hansen and Emma Myers), an estate agent named Dawn (Danielle Brooks), a former video game champion Garret (Jason Momoa), and the beloved Steve (Jack Black). This unlikely group finds themselves transported to the Overworld, a peculiar and blocky realm where they encounter Steve. He takes on the role of their guide, leading them through the mysteries and marvels of this unfamiliar world. Naturally, a formidable villain awaits, and the goal is straightforward yet urgent: to escape this strange realm and save its inhabitants.

Jack Black’s portrayal of Steve is a wonderful mix of charisma and humor. His enthusiasm is palpable, and he seems to relish embodying the iconic character. Jason Momoa’s Garrett, while a departure from traditional Minecraft lore, adds a rugged charm to the ensemble. The chemistry among the cast suggests they had great fun during production, which translates to some genuinely entertaining moments on screen.
Visuals and world-building
One of the film’s biggest wins is how it nails the Minecraft atmosphere. The Overworld comes alive with jaw-dropping visuals that perfectly capture the game’s signature blocky charm. From pixel-perfect forests to caves that beg for a diamond pickaxe, the attention to detail is pure chef’s kiss. Of course, adapting Minecraft’s pixelated simplicity to live-action wasn’t without its quirks: hyperrealistic Villagers were definitely weird to look at in the first moments. But once you settle in, the world is oddly delightful and simply charming.

Just a very long TikTok video
What do audiences love? TikTok, of course! The so-called brainrot (those low-quality, trivial bits of content you can’t stop scrolling through) clearly had a big influence on how the Minecraft movie was made and received. The result? A nonstop mix of memes, random voicelines, silly jokes, and plenty of references to the game. Fans loved it, cheering and clapping throughout the film. One of the biggest moments came with the appearance of the Chicken Jockey: people were so excited that some theaters reported fans getting a little too carried away.
Steve’s voicelines were already familiar to many, thanks to the wave of memes that flooded the platform after the trailer dropped. I believe that without TikTok, the audience’s reaction to this movie would have been completely different. It’s pretty crazy to think that much of the film’s buzz was created by the fans themselves, resulting in over-the-top reactions.

However, what truly left a lasting impression were the numerous references and the seamless integration of in-game mechanics, such as item crafting, the dynamic day-night cycle with zombies, and the immersive combination of sound and visual effects taken straight from the game.
There were some nostalgic moments too. The movie honored the cherished Minecraft streamer Technoblade, who passed away in June 2022 at just 23 years old.
Audience reactions
Now here’s an interesting thing. Critically, the movie has faced a barrage of negative reviews. Critics have heavily disliked the plot and lack of depth. Despite this, the film has defied expectations at the box office. Minecraft movie can be proud of a record-shattering $163 million opening in the US and $150.7 million overseas.
The commercial success of this release owes much to the passion of the Minecraft fanbase. Screenings have turned into lively events, with fans cheering, clapping, and fully immersing themselves in the experience.
So, is this movie good or?…
After reading so many bad reviews and criticism, I expected a complete failure. Did I leave the cinema with second-hand embarrassment? Absolutely not.
For fans and gamers, it serves as a fun, albeit flawed, homage to the Minecraft universe. The plot absolutely isn’t an Oscar-worthy narrative but I believe that not every piece of entertainment we consume needs to be an intellectual feast. Sometimes, it’s okay to just sit back and enjoy something so silly and fun. However, for non-gamers or those unfamiliar with Minecraft, the movie may fall flat. Many references and jokes will go over their heads. But if you are a gamer who wants to unwind to some lighthearted film, Minecraft movie might be perfect for you.
