The day many players waited for has finally come: Sony officially revealed the updated version of PS5 Pro. Let’s wrap up everything we know, including the release date, price, look, and hardware.
PS5 Pro Release Date
Sony officially announced PlayStation 5 Pro on September 10. The company also revealed that the console should hit the shelves on November 7, 2024. Gamers can preorder it from September 26. I assume that Sony wanted to make sure that it could be included at the top of Christmas gift lists. Of course, the actual availability remains uncertain.
PS5 Pro Price
PS5 Pro will be significantly more expensive than the base and digital editions of the console, which cost $499 and $399, respectively. Here are the official PS5 Pro price tags announced by Sony:
- $699.99,
- £699.99,
- €799.99,
- ¥119,980.
At first sight, it may appear that the US price is significantly lower, but that’s because it doesn’t include taxes. Consequently, players in the euro area will pay €799, in Great Britain £699, but $699 + whatever tax their states require in the USA.
Hardware and Performance
There are three main fields where PS5 Pro should surpass its predecessor.
- Spectral Super Resolution. Sony implemented its AI-driven upscaling technology.
- Enhanced GPU. Sony promises much smoother gameplay. According to the company, the new version of the console provides 45% faster rendering.
- Ray Tracing. No discussion about modern gaming platforms can lack the famous ray tracing. If you love watching realistic and physically accurate reflections, the upcoming PlayStation should deliver a significantly better experience.
All this together should make all games optimized for PS5 Pro run at 60 FPS in 4K resolution. The console will have a 2 TB SSD. Unfortunately, it lacks an optical drive.
Games
Like PS5, the Pro will have a preinstalled copy of Astro’s Playroom. A fair number of games will get free updates that make them look better and run smoother on the new console than on the base PS5. The list includes:
- Alan Wake 2,
- Assassin’s Creed: Shadows,
- Demon’s Souls,
- Dragon’s Dogma 2,
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth,
- Gran Turismo 7,
- Hogwarts Legacy,
- Horizon Forbidden West,
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart,
- The Crew Motorfest,
- The First Descendant,
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
The titles optimized for PS5 Pro will be marked with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label. Moreover, the console should enhance the graphics of PS4 titles and make backward-compatible games run better thanks to Enhanced Image Quality and Game Boost.
Reactions
PlayStation 5 Pro will be the most advanced Sony console. However, many players believe that the company demands too much for too little. In comparison, the introductory price of PS4 and PS4 Pro was precisely the same: $399, €399, and £349. Of course, the difference between PS5 and PS5 Pro should be more spectacular than between PS4 and its enhanced edition. Yet, it’s questionable if the offered enhancements justify removing the optical drive and raising the price. Ultimately, all players must individually determine if they are willing to pay $700 for the promise of a stable 60 FPS.
