Age of Mythology: Retold, the new version of the fantasy RTS released in 2002, will soon come out. Therefore, we’re looking at what we can expect from the remake.
Age of Mythology: Retold – Gameplay
Age of Mythology: Retold is an improved version of the Age of Empires spin-off that took players into the world of myths and gods. The game features everything RTS fans know and love, including base building, resource gathering and managing, and producing and commanding armies. However, it introduced some interesting solutions. For instance, before the mission, the player chooses their major god, and when their civilization advances to the next age, they can pick a minor god. Each deity provides special abilities, adanvetes, and access to unique units. A similar mechanic was used in Age of Empires III, but minor gods were replaced by political systems.
In Age of Mythology: Retold each of the four playable factions has three major gods:
- Greeks: Zeus, Hades, Poseidon,
- Egyptians: Ra, Isis, Set,
- Norse: Thor, Odin, Loki,
- Atlanteans: Kronos, Oranos, Gaia.
Retold provides tons of balance changes and other modifications. For instance, attacking and pathfinding have been improved, and as a result, commanding large armies is easier. An increased cup limit lets players build bigger cities and recruit more units. If you like navy battles, you should cherish wider and faster access to all kinds of ships. Buffing mythical units is another noteworthy change. It is logical because legendary monsters should be much more powerful than mortals.

There are also some entirely new features. One of the novelties is the Viliger Priority option, which allows players to decide which of the resources the villagers should be focused on. For instance, if you choose Economics, more workers will be automatically reassigned to food gathering.
Age of Mythology: Retold – Game Modes
Instead of several shorter campaigns, Age of Mythology offers one adventure of epic proportions. Players follow the story of Arkantos, an Atlantean hero who must travel the world to fight the god Poseidon and his minions. Throughout the campaign, players have the chance to command all the playable factions: Greeks, Egyptians, Norse, and Atlanteans.
Besides, players may test their prowess in skirmishes. There’s also multiplayer to compete against other players. Age of Mythology: Retold supports cross-play, so I hope that finding an opponent won’t be hard. Scenario editor, which has been highly popular in all Age of Empires installments, will also return in Retold. As a result,
Age of Mythology: Retold – Expansions
All the previously released Age of Empires remakes and remasters have included DLCs and later received original extensions. Age of Mythology: Retold may make an exception here. Official announcements and descriptions don’t mention The Titans or Tale of the Dragon, DLCs to the original AoM and AoM: Extended Edition, respectively. However, the game is going to feature the Atlantean civilization, originally added by The Titans. Consequently, Retold will include at least some content from DLCs.
The game will also receive no less than two original expansions included in the Premium version. One of them will bring the Chinese pantheon. Therefore, it may be an alternative to Tale of the Dragon, which also adds the Chinese civilization. Will it include the same gods (Fuxi, Nüwa, and Shennong), and will there be a way to play the Tale of the Dragon story campaign? It remains a mystery. The second DLC will provide the game with the sixth playable faction and its gods, but as of now, we don’t know the details. I would like to see the Slavic or Celtic pantheon.
