About the series

The Yakuza series is a Japanese action-adventure, beat ’em up, and role-playing video game franchise developed and published by Sega. The franchise incorporates elements of Japanese culture, including the yakuza underworld. The most frequently featured protagonist is Kazuma Kiryu, a former yakuza member who continuously finds himself pulled back into the world of crime.

The Yakuza series currently consists of nine main games, with multiple spin-offs and remakes, 23 entries in total. The first game, Yakuza, was released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 and introduced players to Kiryu’s story as he navigates through the criminal underworld of Tokyo. Since then, there have been seven more main titles including Yakuza Kiwami – a remake of the original game – and Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which features a new protagonist named Ichiban Kasuga. With its engaging stories, dynamic gameplay, and unique blend of genres, minigames, and other unique features, the Yakuza series has become one of the most popular and critically acclaimed video game franchises of all time.

However, his peace is shattered when he is framed for the murder of a politician. Kiryu is forced to return to the yakuza world to clear his name. Yakuza Kiwami 2 features several improvements over the original game, including updated graphics, gameplay mechanics, and story content. The game also features a new side story starring the fan fan-favorite Goro Majima, called “Majima Saga.”

Yakuza: Dead Souls (2012)

Yakuza: Dead Souls is a zombie-infused spin-off that takes players on an unexpected journey through Kamurocho. This time, the city is overrun by the undead and it’s up to series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu and three other playable characters to survive and find a way to stop the outbreak. The game features intense third-person shooter gameplay, as well as character customization options and side missions for added replay value.

Set in the peaceful seaside town of Onomichi, Yakuza 3 offers a different perspective on the yakuza lifestyle, as Kiryu tries to leave his past behind and find a new purpose in life.
