PES 2020: What’s New in The Pro Evolution Series

11 August 2020

Konami’s long-standing football series has been the eternal rival to the popular FIFA games, focusing on arcade-style gameplay rather than simulation. PES 2020 is looking to continue down this path with esports as its main focal point. With refined game mechanics, a brand-new approach to single-player, and a whole host of new features, you’ll notice that PES 2020 is making a statement for the series future. Let’s take a break from kicking a ball around so we can dive into what’s new in the latest title of this legendary series.

PES 2020 Kick off

New Name, New Pro Evolution

What immediately jumps out to us is the game’s name change. The full title of the game is eFootball PES 2020 and it signifies more than a fresh start. By using the term “eFootball”, Konami is making a direct link to esports, its new focus for the series. This isn’t a big surprise as rivaling series FIFA has been a mainstay in the online sports arena. While fans are unlikely to change the way they call the game, it’s clear the change goes beyond skin deep.

PES 2020 Introduces the Master League

Aside from its commitment to competitive play, Konami is also looking to improve the game’s single-player offerings. They aim to achieve this with the newly minted Master League mode which places you in the shoes of a club’s manager. On the surface, this sounds like any other career mode from the past and other titles. What’s different in PES 2020, however, is the dialogue system which enables you to interact personally with players and staff. From boosting morale to setting club goals, the dialogue system gives you unprecedented influence over your team.

Real World Transfers

One gripe that fans of past iterations of Pro Evolution had was how the games didn’t handle real-world player transfers. PES 2020 changes that by pulling in data from league progressions and changes in rosters to reflect them in the game. They even go a step further by also importing and replicating real-world fees that go with these oftentimes exorbitant transfer amounts. The dialogue system is also going to play a key role when it comes to signing up new players as well as transferring them to other clubs.

More Reactive AI

Sports games like PES 2020 can feel jarring because of the way their NPC players react to certain circumstances. Konami has put a lot of effort into the game’s AI and how it handles a variety of complex situations. In PES 2020 you’ll feel the opponent players taking proper actions when the ball heads into a certain direction or when a sudden attack occurs. Defenders also take quicker action when blocking shots which have always been the series weak point.

Match Day

As part of PES 2020 to take information from the real world, Match Day will allow you to be part of some of the biggest matches happening every week. You’ll select which team you want to represent that week and after the game has concluded and data has been imported, the best players from each side will play against each other online in a live-streamed event.
