Fortnite – Beginners Tips/Guidelines

30 January 2020

Listed as one of the best online battle royal games on the market – Fortnite has turned the traditional online shooter into a crazy –on-trend– sensation. It has become so popular that it sees an average of 40 million players a month. With the likes of Drake, Joe Jonas, and Lil Yachty joining in on battles.

Fortnite

About the Game

The game has a simple premise: 100 random players from all over the world are dropped on an island. Each player then fights until their character dies, or they become victorious as the last one standing.

What makes Fortnite different from other online battle royals? Well, it combines the best of online shooters with that of Minecraft by allowing players to use their environment to build forts, walls, stairs, and ramps.

And there’s so much more… Characters are also extremely customizable and can perform victory dances and taunts that are direct references to your favorites sport or music icons.

Before we get too ahead of ourselves, here’s our toolkit of tips beginners/newbies/ and anyone looking for a recap:

The Drop

A battle bus will airdrop players over the battle island. Players then fall into regions across the map; most will, however, end up near the battle route. Once on the ground, it’s every character for themselves.

After the first few minutes, storms appear on the island, in an attempt to eliminate players, until just a few are left – fighting for the title of the last player standing.

– To get ahead of the curve it is best to release your parachute as late as possible, to allow for easy maneuvering away from open spaces and areas with a lot of players.

Weapons

Every player is dropped with just an axe – specifically, a pickaxe. It is up to the player to find and build on their arsenal. Don’t worry though, there are weapons all over the place.

As with most online shooters you have pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, grenades, etc. These, however, rank in rarity and skill. When starting, we recommend finding and using an assault rifle, as it’s easier to defend yourself at first.

– Remember, the aim of Fortnite is survival. So it doesn’t matter how many players you eliminate, just that you aren’t eliminated in the end.

How to Survive

  • As with every battle royale, things can get chaotic. As a rule of thumb, try to avoid open spaces and crowded areas (unless you’re the type of gamer that wants to be in the heat of battle).
  • If you do find yourself in an open space, build a wall. Having a cover can serve as a great defense against gunfire.
  • Explore the vicinity, and look for higher ground. A bird’s eye view of your surrounding prevents ambushes – especially from above.

Building 101

A player can construct objects with three types of materials: wood, stone, and metal. Each material type has its pros and cons. Wood allows for quicker builds but is weak overall, and metal on the transverse takes longer to reach full health but it is harder to break down.

Fortnite

To build a structure, a player would need to collect the necessary resources from their surroundings, eg. Cutting down a tree for wood. Materials with high durability like metal are harder to find.

  • To ensure that your builds are quick and easy, we suggest setting up hotkeys for constructing.
  • And as a pro tip, remember that destroying the base of a building will ensure that the whole structure collapses.
