Mega Man 11 – A successful continuation of the legendary franchise?

17 December 2019

Mega Man is as old as gaming itself and is a sort of mascot in the industry. With Mega Man 11, this game looks to be getting a reboot, but is the reboot enough to bring this game to the modern era and appeal to the gamers of today? Mega Man was introduced to the gaming public over thirty years ago and from that time onwards, he has been the main star of a large number of sequels and plot twists ranging from the crowded and full of action stages of Mega Man Legends to the single-player duels of the Mega Man Battle Network. He has also had starred in cameos such as the recent one, Marvel vs Capcom.

But at the core of it all, despite having gone through many design changes, the main underpinning story has remained the same all through these thirty years for the Mega Man franchise. From the time of the Blue Bomber till today, the maker of the game, Capcom has still gone on with replicating the successful recipe with the trying designs of each level, strict bosses and the classic look of an 8-bit game. Even with the recent iterations of versions 9 and 10, which could run on both the Xbox 360 as well as the Playstation 3, the game still looks as though it was birthed from a time machine from ages past.

Capcom needed to make Mega Man 11 and hold true to the legacy that it has already built the past 30 years. Capcom stated that there was a temptation to ultra-modernize the game but they did not do so as they felt that it strayed from the path that had already been established with the other Mega Man games and from the path which was accepted by most of the fans.

When you first look at Mega Man 11, you will be reminded of the older Mega Man games as the look and feel retain some of those design elements. But as you dive into the game, you will begin to notice hints of modernization and updated assets. The storyline of the game remains mostly the same as always that revolves around the battle between Dr. Light and Dr. Wily unleashing a deadly combo of robots that can only be halted by Mega Man. The main asset that is at the crux of the battle is the “Double Gear” which gives the gamer several advantages in the gameplay.

The way the story and the levels are structured will definitely feel familiar to most players and fans of the gaming series. The makers of the game have the knack of bringing the enemies of the game very smoothly and gradually, being easy to overcome them initially and then getting much more complicated as time passes on. If you were one of those people who were scared that Mega Man 11 was going to spoil the series, you can safely discard all of those concerns.
