Why Nintendo Switch is so popular?

02 October 2019

When Nintendo launched its Switch console, the primary question was, “Do we really need another Nintendo system?” The answer was yes, as evidenced by the hybrid console’s ongoing popularity that’s reflected in its sales.

At two years in, the Switch has claimed a place for itself in the market with more than 30 million units sold around the globe and the system has far outstripped sales of its cousin, the Nintendo Wii U. The Switch sold more units in two years than the Wii U during its five years of service and the Switch has also been the top selling console throughout 2019. Gaming pundits expressed skepticism with the Switch, pointing out that it didn’t have all the bells and whistles available with the PS4 and Xbox. It couldn’t play movies, music, stream, and it doesn’t support Bluetooth headphones. It’s precisely those qualities that contributed to its popularity. It’s designed to be a gaming system for those that simply want to engage in fun game play.

Versatility is one of its main attractions. It functions as a portable system, a home console, and a handheld game. It can be played as a single player unit and switches seamlessly to a multi-player system for ease of use. Unlike many other systems, it heats up slowly, and incorporates an Amibo reader, along with all the popular features such as rumble. Portability is another reason gamers have so readily adopted the Switch. The Switch design is aesthetically pleasing and appeals to adults and children. It can easily be connected to a TV for youngsters to play at home and taken on the road by teens, tweens and adults. It comes with two controllers called Joy-Cons that can accommodate one or two players and they’re highly versatile. Each Joy-Con is equipped with its own motion controls that can be held horizontally, vertically, or waved about with wild abandon. Players aren’t limited to Joy-Cons, either. There’s a Switch Pro for individuals that prefer the feel of a traditional controller.

If the gaming system itself wasn’t enough of an attraction, Nintendo’s games remain some of the most popular in the world and have translated well to the Switch. The company released “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” for the Switch that’s already achieved classic game status, along with “The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.” All of Nintendo’s favorite and highly recognizable characters are ready to be played, from Super Mario Brothers to Pokémon, and the company has more than 1,000 titles available for download for the Switch. The Nintendo Switch Online shop launched a paid service with subscriptions. The design fosters the ability for smaller game companies to launch their gaming creations directly to the Switch, giving players a wider selection of games from which to choose.

From the moment the first ads came out for the Switch, it was marketed as an entirely new experience, an upgrade, and the appearance of the console reflected that. It’s the console of choice for anyone that likes NES titles, along with games that were originally available elsewhere with the region-free Switch. It’s equally applicable for indie games, making it one of the most versatile and highly sought game systems of all time.
