Video games that deserve remakes

21 September 2019

Modern technology enables video game companies to develop many incredible games each year. We’re so spoiled with choices that sometimes it’s actually difficult to find enough time to go through all of the interesting titles. Yet, for many of us, the best games we’ve ever played are the ones we used to enjoy as kids. There’s just something about this nostalgic feeling brought by the memories from the past that makes us want to go back and revisit them again.

There seems to be an emerging trend in the gaming industry to remake old classics. It’s much appreciated by older fans who remember the originals. But it’s also a great treat for the younger players who can get to know these games and discover what made them so loved all those years ago. But even though some of the most iconic productions are getting their new editions, with Final Fantasy VII remake awaiting its release in a few months to name just one of them, there are many that are being overlooked. And while as a keen gamer you’re probably more than capable of creating your own list of games that deserve remakes in your opinion, here are a few suggested ones to get you started.

Vagrant Story

It’s definitely one of the remakes many people are waiting for. After its original release in 2000, it managed to gain a lot of popularity even though the game was deemed too complicated for beginners. Yet for those who took their time to understand the inner workings of the battle system, Vagrant Story turned out to be one of the best gaming experiences of its time. Due to the interest in the game, Square (now Square Enix), the company behind this production, decided to re-release it for newer consoles like PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. But even after all these years, there are still many fans who await the remake of this action-packed RPG with a great storyline and strategic elements.

Chrono Trigger

Chrono-Trigger

Another one of Square’s creations that deserves to get one more chance is the first instalment of the Chrono franchise – Chrono Trigger. Its release in 1995 turned out to be a huge commercial success, quickly amassing a huge following. With its focus on character development and unique solutions in battles, the game managed to surpass expectations and become one of the classic titles of the genre. They say you can’t improve perfection, but with enough work put into it, a new version could emerge as one of the biggest hits on the market and repeat the success of the original.

System Shock 2

This is an example of the game that could become a huge hit if only it was published a few years later. Unfortunately, even though System Shock 2 received many positive reviews, it didn’t become a commercial success. This first-person shooter brilliantly combines combat and horror to give players the best possible experience. And while the BioShock series was created to fill the gap left on the market, there are still many fans who await the announcement of the System Shock 2 remake with their fingers crossed.

Bushido Blade

Bushido-Blade

This old-school one-on-one fighting video game was originally released in 1997. Its unique approach to combat between two opponents enabled Bushido Blade to become one of the favourites among fans from around the world. Without any time limit or a health bar, whether you win or not depends mainly on your skills and concentration. Choosing the right strategy is important because you can win with a single hit or decide to weaken your opponent by attacking him repeatedly. There’s no doubt that a modern remake of this game would become as popular as its predecessor.
