An unforgettable story in the Wild, Wild West…

The first Red Dead Redemption game, developed by Rockstar and released in May 2010, was a massive commercial and critical success. It became one of its generation’s most celebrated open-world games, praised for its compelling story, immersive world, and rich character development. Eight years later, Rockstar released a sequel that again took the gaming community by storm. Red Dead Redemption 2 was another massive success that also confirmed that the world built by Rockstar is a place worth coming back to.

Since October 29, 2024 players have a chance to go back in time once again: with the premiere of Red Dead Redemption on PC, a remastered version of the classic RPG game. Let’s take a look at whether this adventure is worth returning to after all these years, and what improvements and additions the PC version brings to the table.

Content-wise, the game features the complete campaign that follows the legendary John Marston on his quest for redemption. The story unfolds during the final moments of America’s Wild West, capturing the essence of this turbulent era. The former outlaw must confront his past and pursue his former gang members if he hopes to achieve a peaceful life with his family.

Set in the early 1900s, the game takes place in a fictionalized version of the American frontier, including expansive environments like deserts, forests, small towns, and the borderlands between the United States and Mexico.

Red Dead Redemption PC Undead Nightmare

Players can also access the Undead Nightmare DLC which offers even more hours of fun. This iconic horror companion story introduces a completely new narrative, setting, and gameplay mechanics, centered around a zombie apocalypse that has descended upon the game’s world. It’s a stand-alone, self-contained story that doesn’t tie directly into the main game’s narrative, though it features John Marston as the protagonist.

On your way, you’ll encounter random events that can occur during your travels, like sudden zombie ambushes or attacks on towns, forcing players to quickly defend civilians and secure areas. Moreover, the game’s world becomes more bleak and desolate in the expansion, with ruined towns, deserted camps, and other signs of the apocalypse.

The world is filled with dynamic weather, day-night cycles, and random encounters that make the world feel alive. You can find animals to hunt, bandits to fight, or strangers with side quests to complete.

Combat in Red Dead Redemption revolves around firearms, and the game offers a variety of weapons, including pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns, and bows. However, misbehaving has its price: Red Dead Redemption features a Wanted system, where committing crimes (e.g., robbing, killing civilians, or attacking lawmen) will increase your notoriety. As your wanted level increases, law enforcement, bounty hunters, and various NPCs will relentlessly pursue you.
