Is Retro Gaming Still a Thing?

The graphics are unsophisticated, gameplay follows a predetermined path, and there’s limited interaction between characters yet retro gaming remains popular.
Downloads of retro games continues to increase and an entire subculture has even grown up around the music that was used in early games.
Retro gaming is alive and well around the world and games are in high demand.

From “Space Invaders” and “Mario Brothers” to “Street Fighter” and “Legend of Zelda,” the games from the 1970s and 1980s have captured the hearts of gamers everywhere – whether they were played on a computer, game console, or at the arcade. Classic gaming as it’s also known shows no signs of abating. Individuals are continually drawn to the games, despite primitive
graphics and limited gameplay options.

The overriding reason that many people indulge in retro gaming is nostalgia. No matter what age a gamer was when they first began to play, they recall the time and era with fondness. Returning to those games enables players to relive the feelings the games engendered when they first played. There’s a strong emotional attachment and the games are a link to the individual’s
personal past. Even the 1990s “game wars” are remembered with poignancy.

Retro gaming also has a strong psychological component that’s beneficial to the psyche and self-image. Several studies have concluded that playing retro games can promote mental health and a sense of well-being. The studies showed that those playing retro games typically had better self-esteem, coping skills, stress management, and more patience. Greater mental acuity was noted the older the player.

Finally, returning to the games of their youth is just plain fun for players. Many individuals are using retro games to introduce their progeny to the video game world in the hope that they’ll form the same kind of relationships with the characters as they did themselves. For some, their
fondest memories are of playing the games with parents or friends that are now deceased. The memories of gaming past are priceless and one of the components that at the core of retro gaming.
