The game is based mainly on its version of an 18th-century novel, Journey to the West. Players will follow a protagonist known as the Destined One. Developers promise to provide players with an original story and let them uncover the truth hidden beneath the layers of myths and fables.

Wukong seems to follow the path of most modern action RPGs, so it focuses on combat and, to some degree, exploration. Fights appear to involve a lot of blocking, dodging, and parrying; hence, Soulslike fans should feel themselves at home. The protagonist can use a vast array of spells and other attacks that let Wukong overcome powerful bosses as well as large packs of weaker enemies. Developers promise a wide menagerie of different opponents and mythical creatures, each posing a unique challenge.
Sun Wukong can use special abilities, including shape-shifting. This feature allows players to transform into other creatures. In the official gameplay trailer, we can see how the protagonist changes into a fly or some other insect to get past enemies unnoticed and grows to a gigantic size to fight a larger group of adversaries. Those effects are time-restricted, so the Destined One can’t decimate all the foes as an enormous monster or constantly use the bug form.

The game takes advantage of the Unreal 5 engine capabilities, utilizing the latest technology to render its richly detailed world and intricate character animations. With such graphics, it’s no wonder Black Myth: Wukong aims not just to captivate gamers but also to elevate the status of Chinese-developed games on the global stage. The price of cutting-edge graphics may be high system requirements. I’m curious how the game will run on next-gen consoles and what monster PC we need to run Wukong at 4K and 60 FPS.
Black Myth: Wukong – release date and platforms
Game Science, the game’s developer and producer, aimed at releasing it in 2023. However, in January 2023, the studio informed players that it had moved the release to mid-2024. The exact date was revealed at The Game Awards 2023 in December, when Game Science announced that Black Myth: Wukong in 2023 would come out on August 20, 2024. It will be available on PC, Xbox Series S|X, and PlayStation 5.
