The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria overview

06 April 2023

Are you hungry for adventures in Middle Earth? The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is an upcoming survival crafting game set in the iconic world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books. With a rather unusual genre, this title might become one of the best LOTR games.

The rich universe of The Lord of the Rings spawned numerous games, from RTS to RPG titles like Shadow of Mordor to the MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online. Return to Moria looks like it will be a whole new experience, mostly because of the unusual choice of genre. We can’t wait to experience more LOTR adventures, this time as a survival game!

Let’s go back to Misty Mountains

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is going to tell a story about a company of dwarves summoned by Lord Gimli Lockbearer. This group is given an important mission: to reclaim Khazad-dûm, more commonly known as Moria. Those who read the books or watched the movies know that this place is as mesmerizing as it is terrifying.

The game will do its best to capture this atmosphere through great visuals and an immersive story. The developers promised to respect the source material; in order to do so, they consulted Tolkien professor Corey Olsen to make sure the story fits with the lore. Players will learn many stories as they explore the abandoned mines, including those from years before the events of LOTR happened. Players will be able to customize their characters in a diverse character creator and further develop their hero by acquiring new weapons and armor pieces.

Gameplay details

Dwarfs are known for their incredible crafting and survival skills. You’ll have to prove yours! The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is all about collecting and managing resources. You’ll explore the world, mine, scavenge for supplies, and build your own fortifications—not only to survive but also to bring back Moria to its former glory.

We might expect diverse gameplay with procedurally generated levels. Thanks to this solution, no single gameplay will be the same. Players will have to be mindful of different aspects of the exploration of this, well, pretty terrifying place. Careless actions will alert enemies: even though Balrog is gone, hordes of enemies are still there! There will be a few mechanics that will make our exploration a dangerous one. Since it’s a survival game, players will have to take care of their character’s health and sanity. Bravery is important, but so is clever resource management.

Remember though: before you set out on a journey, you need a fellowship! The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria supports 8-player co-op mode. With such a large group of friends, your time in the mines is bound to be exciting. Moreover, managing and planning actions together can be a fun (and perhaps even a bit challenging) experience. Of course, if you prefer to go alone, that’s fine: the game is playable solo as well. Nevertheless, playing The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria with friends brings back the important aspect of the story: working and helping one another in order to survive and defeat evil.

Diggy Diggy Hole

You’ll have to manage resources, plan and execute strategies, and choose equipment for your team—all these decisions are critical for the success of your mission. Furthermore, players will have a sanity meter displayed. Should your characters be tired, loud, or delve into the darkness for too long, they might simply lose their sanity. And that’s a pretty strong incentive to plan your expedition carefully. With this beloved setting, the game might become one of the best survival games of the year.

As you venture deeper into the mines of Moria, you’ll also have to think about how to make use of the technology available in order to survive in such a hostile environment. You can build tools and machines, as well as create weapons and defensive structures—anything that helps you progress through the game.

By planning constructions, utilizing light, and restoring ancient structures like forges, you’ll be able to craft new weapons and unlock the long-lost machines.

Enemies lurk in every corner

Even though Sauron is long gone, the evil creatures haven’t been completely wiped out. Moria is filled with dark and twisted monsters. You’ll have to navigate through the mines carefully! Of course, you are not completely powerless: mines hide many secrets, including powerful magical weapons and artifacts. However, mining and gathering resources make noise. The sound of many pickaxes might attract unwanted attention.

When is the game coming out?

The bad news is, we are not sure when The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria will be released. On the official website, we can read that the game will hit the shelves sometime in the spring of 2023. For now, the only platform confirmed is PC
