Will PlayStation 4 Life Cycle End after Release of its Successor?

04 November 2020

There’s good news on multiple fronts for PS4 owners. Sony is hedging its bets and will continue to create titles for the PS4. The console’s life cycle won’t be coming to an end anytime “soon.” Sony officials say the PS4 system will be supported until 2022. That could be extended until 2025, since most new gen systems don’t become really profitable until four years into its introduction.

No one will be giving up their favorite PS4 titles if they invest in the PS5. Sony issued a statement saying that the “overwhelming majority” of PS4 games on disc and titles that have been downloaded will be playable on the PS5. However, the PS5 Digital Edition won’t have a disc drive, so discs won’t be playable on that model.

Sony has indicated that the PS5 release is set for the 2020 holiday season, just in time to compete with the new Xbox Series X. No exact date has been given for the PS5 release, but “in time for the holiday season” could mean as soon as Nov. 13, 2020. The price of PS5 will be $499 in the U.S.

Those are all important factors for PS4 owners who may not be ready to shell out the dollars for the new console. The execs and developers at Sony aren’t blind. The company has sold more than 100 million PS4 units to date and while gamers are always excited about the next incarnation of their favorite system, sales could be slower than usual due to the economic fallout resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
