How to Get Good in First Person Shooters?

25 August 2019

Getting good in first-person shooters isn’t an easy task, some people spend years playing some games just to get good at it. Nevertheless, there are some things you can do immediately that will make you see an increase in your performance and advance in multiplayer ranking quickly:

Get a Speedy Internet Connection

This is one of the most common-sense advice out there, you need to have a good internet connection if you want to fully enjoy online games. The most important thing you need to look out for when buying an internet package is the ping of the service – the ping measures how much time it takes for a packet of data to transfer to a server and back again to your computer, in other words, it measures how much time it takes for a small amount of data to be communicated. Most first-person shooters don’t require fast download speeds, but, rather, fast response time is all you need. You’ll be able to notice the opponents faster and quickly respond.

The Controller is Extremely Important

Whether you’re playing with a keyboard and mouse or use a controller to play the games on your console, it doesn’t matter, you need to configure it to best fit your abilities and playstyle:

Movement sensitivity: how sensitive do you want your character to be when you move your mouse or analog stick? This determines how accurately and quickly you can respond to threats when you see them. If you’re experienced and are able to accurately respond even if your character moves fast, then you should set a high sensitivity. If, however, you already have trouble controlling your character, you should lower the sensitivity to ensure you have more accurate control.

The controller/keyboard layout: what button do you want to use to jump? What about the button you want to use to launch a physical attack? These are the questions you need to ask yourself when customizing the buttons’ actions. While most video games have a decent layout, some have terrible ones that make it harder for you to play. Not to mention, if you’ve spent a substantial amount of time playing a single game, if you move on to a new game with a different layout, you’ll have a lot of difficulties adjusting and it would be much better to just change the settings.

Play with Friends

The best way to ensure you spend a lot of time playing the game and have fun at the same time is to play the game with your friends. If you’re just starting to get into the game, you should ask your experienced friends to help you out. They’ll be able to give you tips and tricks specific to the game and how to best go about getting new and powerful weapons, level up, or anything else the game requires you to do. Not to mention, you’ll be able to notice and learn from their playstyle and directly ask them whenever you feel any confusion. The advantages are just too long to list, and many professional first-person shooter players started at the beginning just enjoying the game with their friends. The potential downside might be that your friends might get annoyed with you if you’re too bad at the game. You can do some matches on your own and get a handle on the basics, and after that, you should ask them to help you out with the harder less intuitive aspects of the game.
