Overwatch 2: Everything we know about the sequel

News Now Trending 02/08/2020

BlizzCon 2019 seemed to be, by all accounts, a return to form for the game development giant. Among all the big reveals, we got a surprise announcement in Overwatch 2. Well, not extremely shocking in of itself as rumors of a sequel to the hero shooter had been flying around for quite some time.  What made Overwatch 2’s reveal unexpected was how it’s not exactly a sequel in the traditional sense. Let’s take a look at everything we know so far about the hotly anticipated follow-up.

What is Overwatch 2’s release date?

Were you to ask game director Jeff Kaplan this exact question, his answer would be a straight “I don’t know”. In classic Blizzard fashion, the game is currently in early development stages. This means we’re likely to wait for quite a bit of time. Kaplan stated during the Overwatch panel at BlizzCon 2019 that he and his team want to make the best game possible. So, they’re going to give the project the time it needs.

Is Overwatch 2 a sequel?

Yes and no. There is a “2” in the title makes it sound like a regular sequel. The devil is in the details, though. When you dive deeper into Overwatch 2’s specifics, it sounds like a big expansion. The key addition it brings to the table is its PvE missions. From what we’ve been told so far, these missions are based on the Archive events from the original game. The difference will be the addition of cutscenes, dialogue, and other bits to flesh out proper stories.

How will Story Missions work?

It’s clear from Blizzard’s Overwatch panel that the team is going all-in with the sequel’s PvE content. For one, there will be a main campaign comprised of missions that are story-based. Overwatch heroes, both new and veterans, will team up to fight Null Sector and uncover their motives. There will also be Hero Missions of a more replayable nature. In these Overwatch 2 missions, you’ll be able to level up your heroes and unlock customizations to change up your playstyle.

What will happen with the original Overwatch?

The BlizzCon 2019 panel stated that both Overwatch 2 and its predecessor will carry on coexisting for quite some time. The most interesting bit was that multiplayer content and heroes will be coming to both games free of charge. As for the PvE and story-based content, that will be exclusive to the sequel.

New PvP mode and Hero

While there will be plenty of additions coming to Overwatch 2 and the original game, we already know of one new mode and hero. The brand-new multiplayer mode is a sort of tug-of-war called Push. Both teams fight to help a robot in their respective sides push a barrier across the map. The team to get their robot the farthest wins. As for the new hero, she’s called Sojourn. We don’t know much about her aside that she’s of Canadian descent, has a gun arm, and plays a crucial role in Overwatch 2’s narrative.
