Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has been out since late 2018 and the next entry in the series, Valhalla, is on the horizon. Hot off the heels of Valhalla’s reveal, you’re probably looking to dive into Odyssey in preparation for what is to come. It’s a pretty beefy game, though. There are a lot of quests to complete, stories to experience, and killing to be done. Whether you’re a veteran Assassin’s Creed player or a complete newbie, it’s bound to feel daunting. To assist you on your odyssey, we’ve put together the best beginner tips for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
Not What It Used to Be
Back when the very first Assassin’s Creed game launched, it was a stealth action game. After many incarnations, the series has entered the realm of RPGs. As such, you have to see Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for what it is; a role-playing game. There are stats, levels, gear, and all other trappings of the genre. This means you will encounter enemies you can’t defeat until you’re strong enough. If you’re fresh to the series this may not be a problem in itself. However, you must keep in mind level recommendations. They’re not just there for show. If Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is telling you “you need to be this high level to play in this area” then listen to it. You could easily end up fighting enemies who’ll one-shot you while all you’ll be doing is a few measly points of damage.
A Giant Playground
There’s a lot to do in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and we mean A LOT. Besides the game’s main campaign, you’ll find a ton of sidequests, stories and mini activities scattered everywhere you go. You’ll be tempted to just focus on the main story quests but you’ll inevitably end up with a quest that requires a higher level. Don’t fret. When you find yourself in this situation, just go do something else. Let that story quest loom over your head for a bit while you clear a few camps and help out a few citizens. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is rich in ancient Greek history. This makes a lot of the side activities worth exploring.
Take These Two
Building up your character in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a constant dance between balancing out your gear and choosing the right skills. There’s no real right or wrong way to develop your badass Spartan warrior as long as you aim for battle effectiveness. There are, however, two skills that we recommend you take as early as possible. One is Revelation, which pings everything of interest on the map including loot. This will make exploring the map to gather items a lot more manageable. The second ability we recommend is the Shield Breaker. The ancient Greeks were known for their shields and that fact has crossed over into Assassin’s Creed Odyssey too. Most enemies will have shields and they can be a nuisance. The Shield Breaker ability will allow you to yank those big metal protective slabs off enemy forearms, opening them up for attack.
